Updated over a week ago

Your Healthcare card is the quick and easy way to pay for qualified healthcare expenses using your Health Savings Account (HSA).

Read on to find out how to use your card, or jump to a section with these links:

What is a Healthcare debit card?

Your Healthcare Health Savings Account (HSA) card works like a pre-loaded debit card.

  • You can pay for all kinds of qualified medical expenses covered under your HSA.

  • Visit the sigis.org site for a list of merchants using the Inventory Information Approval System (IIAS) that can automatically identify eligible medical expenses.

Some of the benefits of using your HealthEquity® Visa® Health Account Card* are:

  • Having a convenient debit card for quick and easy access to your account funds.

  • Use it like a regular credit card to pay for your plan-allowed qualified medical expenses.

  • Log into your HSA account or the HealthEquity mobile app to check your balance anytime, anywhere.**

Set up or change a PIN number

Your card should be run as credit and does not require a Personal Identification Number (PIN). Adding a PIN to the card will, when making payments, immediately deduct the funds from your account (like a debit card), which can make fraud recovery more difficult. If you have selected a PIN you can choose to run the card as debit with the PIN or as credit.

Only fully authorized users on the account can request a PIN or change a PIN. To do so, you can call member services at 866.346.5800.

Note: a PIN cannot be requested within the first 24 hours after the activation of the primary member’s card. A PIN can only be requested once every 24 hours. Member and dependent cards will all share the same PIN.

How to use my Healthcare debit card

You can use your HSA healthcare card or HSA funds to pay for deductibles, copayments, coinsurance amounts, and other qualified medical expenses.

Your Healthcare HSA debit card makes it quick and easy to pay for qualified medical expenses.

  • When you swipe your card at checkout, if requested, select “credit” (even though it isn’t a credit card).

  • Your current HSA available balance amount can be used for purchases.

  • You can pay for all types of qualified medical expenses covered under your HSA.

Where can I use my Healthcare debit card?

You can use your cards at doctor offices, pharmacies, and stores that implement an Inventory Information Approval System (IIAS) that can validate whether an item or service is HSA qualified.

Your card should be run as credit and does not require a Personal Identification Number (PIN). Once activated, use it like a regular credit card to pay for your plan-allowed qualified medical expenses.

Please note, while using your HealthEquity account card:

  • All account cards have a $5,000 daily spending limit (subject to change based on transaction criteria).

  • Cards cannot be used at an ATM.

  • You can only spend what is available in your account; no overdraft is available.

What happens if I use my Healthcare debit card at a store without an Inventory Information Approval System (IIAS)?

If your healthcare card is declined at the point of sale, due to an ineligible merchant or provider (not coded as a provider of potentially qualified medical products/services), you can purchase the products with your own funds and then submit a claim for reimbursement.

  1. Log into your HSA account and select Reimburse Me.

  2. Select Add a New Expense or select an existing expense to be reimbursed.

  3. To add a new expense, fill out all fields and upload documentation.

  4. Click Save Expense.
