How do I order a Commuter card?

A new card is sent for your initial Commuter order and electronically funded thereafter.

(Cards issued prior to April 2021 are valid for 3 years; cards issued after April 2021 are valid for 5 years). An expiring Commuter card will automatically reissue if:

  • There have been card transactions or orders within the past six months

  • There has not been activity in the past six months but there is a balance of at least $50

How do I activate my Commuter card?

Call the activation number on your card to activate your Commuter card.

The Commuter card is sent with an activation sticker on the front that states:
Your new Commuter Card requires activation. Please call toll-free 1-***-***-****

You must activate the card in order to use it.

How do I use my Commuter card?

The Commuter card is like a pre-paid debit card. It’s the quick and easy way to pay for qualified public transit and parking expenses from your Commuter Transit Account.

Use it at transit agency ticket vending machines, ticket windows, and transit agency ordering websites.

You can use your pre-tax dollars to fund your card (up to $280 for transit and up to $280 for parking, or both).

  • You may have your card reloaded from your account automatically on the 20th of the month prior to each benefit month (for example, on June 20 for your July benefit month).

  • Or you may manually reload your card from your account. If you choose to reload your card manually, you need to do so before the 10th of the month prior to your benefit month.

Funds are withdrawn automatically from each paycheck for deposit into your account before taxes are deducted.

Can I use the Commuter card with another credit or debit card?

You can use the Commuter card balance and another card to pay for commuting expenses if available on certain ticket and parking vending machines.

Use your Commuter card just like you use a debit card—just swipe and go.

Use it at transit agency ticket vending machines, ticket windows, and transit agency ordering websites.

  • If you have to choose between a debit or credit option when using your card at a ticket vending machine, choose “credit.”

  • If you choose “debit,” you’ll be asked for a personal identification number (PIN), which is automatically generated and assigned when you receive your card. If you enter a wrong PIN three times the card will lock and you will need to contact Customer Service to have the card turned back on. You can retrieve your forgotten PIN by calling the card activation number. When a card is expiring, the new card will have the same PIN. A new PIN number is assigned when a card is replaced due to lost, stolen, not received, damaged, destroyed/thrown away or name change.

Can I use the HealthEquity Commuter card for multiple operators/transit agencies?

You can use your Commuter Card for multiple operators/transit agencies.

You can verity if a specific operator accepts the commuter card by completing the following:

2. Click Next to open the select an Operator page.

3. Enter your ZIP Code to see the available options for transit.

4. Select the operator/transit agency you want to use.
